PROJECT SUMMARY
This was a project from my art class where we had to take an old meaningful photograph from history and take another modern picture and then weave them together. I weaved together a picture of a woman with a gun over her shoulder with a picture of a classmate with a backpack over hers. The parallel showed the difference of how we arm ourselves in the past versus the present, with guns or knowledge.
WHY?
This project was an assignment in an art class with Mrs. Fio, but I originally had to choose the photo from a variety of options. I chose the one with the girl with the gun because despite the desolate background and weapon over her shoulder, the young woman had a slight smile. The strap of her gun reminded me of a backpack, so I took a photo of a classmate who looked similar to the photograph with a backpack in the same stance.
HOW?
I very slowly measured each picture in long strip and then cut along the line. From there, I tediously weaved and glued each individual strand, being careful to ensure that each part was in the correct order. The entire process took hours, mostly due to the weaving.
WHAT?
The result
SO WHAT?
My results show a parallel between the past and present. In the past, we armed ourselves with weapons, but now the school arms us with knowledge to prepare us for the dangerous world.
WHAT'S NEXT?
If I had more time, I would've cut the strip thinner so that the photographs looked more complete and less blocky. That way, the whole photograph would be more visible and easy to compare.
REFERENCES & ACKNOWLEDGMENTS
Mrs. Fio provided the idea along with the black and white photograph whereas I took the colored photo of my model, M. R., at school.
JUDGES FEEDBACK
I find this piece of art to be particularly fascinating because of its orginality and the motivation behind it. I found it really fascinating how you wanted to emphasize the idea of changes from past to present. The ideas here are great albeit a bit difficult to distinguish the full image of both women.
